“图腾”一词源于美洲印第安人方言，原意指本部落奉为始祖的某种动物或植物。

只要是古老的氏族、部落，在其历史肇始之初，都曾经历过图腾崇拜阶段。中外各族，几乎概莫能外。

虎崇拜的起源始于汉代，按东汉应劭在《风俗通义》上载，汉代民间在除夕过年之际，流行在门上画一对虎形。

应劭，河南南顿人（项城县），如今这一带仍有此项风俗的遗存踪迹。如在新年前几天，假若听说该年有灾异流行，于是家家户户用黄表纸剪一对虎形贴在门神两边，并上书：“大虎大虎，把住门口，瘟神一到，扭头就走”。

按我国的传统风俗，除夕即除灾。可见，民间崇拜虎，一般认为起源于用来去除旧年的灾异。

不过，俗话说“谈虎色变”，虎为百兽之王，甚至还会吃人，民间除灾不求神佛，却求助老虎，这种民俗文化是怎样来的呢？

实际上，早在六七千年前，中原已有龙虎造型。河南濮阳西水坡原始墓葬中，其墓主或许就是黄帝之孙颛顼，里面有一幅用蚌壳精心摆砌而成的龙虎图像。墓主之右是龙，墓主之左是虎。可见，崇拜龙虎风俗早在五千多年前就已流行。

在原始社会，崇拜风俗又被称为图腾崇拜，一般认为是作为血缘关系的部落标志。如对龙的崇拜，传说有青龙氏、白龙氏等。

相对于龙的崇拜，在性质上对虎的崇拜还是稍有区别的，广义上讲还是可以称为“图腾”，但这类图腾崇拜应归类到防御性质。

前面提及的濮阳市原始社会墓葬中的龙形，显示死者生前为龙族部落，而其中的虎形，应该用来镇墓除灾的，后来逐渐发展中成为一种信念。

作为虎图腾部落联盟之一，就有远古羌戎或氏羌。据《后汉书·西羌传》载：“西羌之本，出自三苗”。相传“三苗”与尧舜发生过一次激战，战败后一些被迫迁到三危（甘肃敦煌一带），即西羌远祖。古羌族主要分布于甘肃、青海、四川一带，经常出现于甲骨卜辞。商周时，羌族又活动于河西走廊。时至今日，在甘肃南部渭河流域，曾出土新石器时代的彩陶瓶，上绘有人首虎斑虎耳，盖子制成人头像，即满脸虎斑纹饰虎耳，可见这里的远古羌戎发祥地之一。

古代匈奴族的祖先也曾崇拜虎图腾。很多古文化遗址和遗物上，还有古匈奴人虎图腾崇拜遗存。比如在古匈奴时代的青铜饰牌中，虎形是常用的神兽纹饰之一，如今在很多匈奴古墓出土的文物中，均发现虎形铜饰牌的踪迹。

古代巴族崇拜白虎，以白虎为图腾。据《后汉书·南蛮西南夷列传》载：“察君死，魂魄世为白虎。巴氏以虎饮人血，遂以人祠焉”。
